For its part, Tesla – also led by Elon Musk – has held on to 11,509 Bitcoins, worth over $1.27 billion, putting it near the list of 10 largest listed companies holding foreign exchange reserves. Earlier this year, Tesla reported quarterly profits exceeding $600 million after revaluing its assets under updated accounting rules.
As for the price of Bitcoin, it fell slightly last Friday by 0.3% to settle at $110,541, a drop of around 12% compared to its highest levels recorded at $126,080.
SpaceX goes too far by owning Bitcoin
SpaceX first gained attention in 2021 when Elon Musk revealed that the company held Bitcoin without giving specific numbers. Later, reports revealed that the company collected around 25,724 BTC coins in early 2021 and its value was then estimated at around $373 million.
However, according to documents seen by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the company wrote off $373 million in the value of its Bitcoin holdings between 2021 and 2022, and may have sold them partially or completely. Reports also show that the company has listed these assets on its balance sheet, but it is not yet clear whether it has completely abandoned them.
Previously, Elon Musk publicly confirmed SpaceX’s investment in Bitcoin in 2021, after Tesla purchased $1.5 billion worth of the currency, a deal that coincided with the currency’s price reaching unprecedented levels at the time.
As for the second quarter of 2022, Tesla sold 75% of its Bitcoin holdings for $936 million, leaving only $184 million in value, and Musk – known for his strong support for digital currencies – continues to have a strong influence on the markets with his repeated statements on Bitcoin and Dogecoin.
