Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal said he is leaving the company after six years, ending a tenure that included the exchange’s public listing, its legal battle with the SEC and its push for crypto legislation in Washington.
After 6 years, I’m leaving @Coinbase. I will transition to an advisory role at the end of the month and continue my tenure on the Board of Directors of Coinbase National Trust Company. I will be a Coinbase ally for life and am grateful to @brian_armstrong, @emilemc and the Coinbase Board…

Grewal said he will take on an advisory role at the end of the month and continue to serve on the board of directors of Coinbase National Trust Company. He said he would remain a “lifelong ally of Coinbase” and thanked CEO Brian Armstrong, Coinbase President and COO Emilie Choi, and the company’s board of directors.
His departure comes after a period in which Coinbase became one of the most visible legal and political players in the crypto industry. Grewal highlighted the company’s public listing, its fight with the SEC, its move from Delaware to Texas and its work around the GENIUS and CLARITY Acts as part of the legal program he helped lead.
Molly Abraham will become Coinbase’s new general counsel. Grewal said Abraham had worked with him on the company’s most significant legal battles for more than five years and was ready to lead the legal team.
Coinbase will also give Ryan VanGrack a new role as vice president. Grewal said VanGrack will work with governments and partners around the world as Coinbase seeks to expand its regulatory and institutional relationships.
Faryar Shirzad will continue to lead Coinbase’s global policy team. Grewal said the team’s work with governments and regulators remains essential as the company pushes for a clearer policy and legal framework for crypto.
The transition marks a change in direction at Coinbase’s legal operations, as the exchange continues to push for market structure legislation and greater clarity around crypto regulation in the United States.
