Ethereum slows zkEVM sprint to lock down security until 2026

The Ethereum Foundation makes a clear strategic change. Now puts security ahead of raw performance for zkEVM development. After a year of dramatic advances in speed and cost, the Foundation notes that the next phase is focused on long-term resilience. This decision reframes zkEVM’s progress from rapid experimentation to production-grade infrastructure.

Advances in speed no longer define progress

zkEVM teams have already achieved huge efficiency gains. Test times were reduced from approximately 16 minutes to approximately 16 seconds. Costs fell almost 45 times over the same period. These achievements removed previous usability barriers. Ethereum no longer needs to prove that zk scalability works. Now it needs to demonstrate that zk systems remain secure under global economic burden.

The Foundation now requires strict cryptographic guarantees. Developers must achieve demonstrable 100-bit security by May 2026 and full 128-bit security by the end of the year. These goals bring zkEVMs closer to traditional cryptographic standards used in finance and national security. Ethereum explicitly rejects shortcuts that are based on unproven assumptions.

ZK Test Risks Drive Change

Some modern zk systems rely on mathematical guesses that lack full real-world validation. The Foundation openly points out these risks. It urges teams to strengthen testing systems, expand audits, and reduce reliance on fragile assumptions. Security flaws at the zk layer could cascade to DeFi rollups, bridges, and protocols. Ethereum chooses prevention over speed optics.

Ethereum aligns this security push with institutional reach. The Foundation highlights Ethereum’s track record: near perfect uptime since 2015 and over a million validators securing the network. Companies demand predictability and demonstrable guarantees, not experimental speed records. zkEVM’s security maturation supports Ethereum’s role as a neutral settlement layer for global finance.

Ethereum signals long-term maturity

This roadmap marks a cultural change. Ethereum no longer competes with competitors based solely on benchmarks. Build infrastructure intended to survive decades of adversarial pressure. Accelerate adoption of unlocked zkEVM. Security will decide whether zkEVMs become critical to the global financial stack.
