Ripple announced another major partnership

Ripple announced that it has joined the x402 Foundation as a “core member,” an organization aimed at developing open payment standards for AI agents and web applications. Operating under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation, the organization aims to integrate payment transactions directly into Internet interactions.

According to a release from the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation was officially launched following the completion of the transfer of the x402 protocol, developed by Coinbase, to the foundation. With an open and unbiased governance structure, the organization plans to create a common standard that will allow AI agents, APIs and applications to perform financial transactions as easily as they exchange data.

The x402 protocol integrates secure payment features directly into HTTP-based Internet interactions. This allows AI agents to purchase services, pay for API usage, or conduct machine-to-machine transactions with other automated systems.

Ripple said that as AI agents begin to play a larger role in transaction processes, fast, reliable and interoperable payment infrastructures will be required. The company announced that it has developed tools and infrastructure for this area on the $XRP Ledger, and that with x402 support, AI agents can now transact using $XRP and RLUSD.

Markus Infanger, Senior Vice President of RippleX, said open standards provide the basis for reliable and interoperable machine-to-machine payments. Infanger added that Ripple will support the consistent application of standards across the industry by contributing to the technical and governance efforts of the x402 Foundation.
